Aircraft Requirements

Applicants for a Sport Pilot practical test are required to provide an aircraft that meets the requirements and limitations of a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA), as defined in 14 CFR Part 1 Section 1.1. The aircraft can be a Special Light Sport Aircraft (SLSA), an Experimental Light Sport Aircraft (ELSA), or an Experimental-Amateur Built Aircraft (E-AB) or Certified Aircraft (standard airworthiness certificate) that complies with the LSA rules. The provided aircraft must be equipped with fully functional dual flight controls.

Prior to commencing the Oral portion of the Practical Test, the applicant will be required to demonstrate to the Designated Pilot Examiner, through appropriate documentation, the registration status and airworthiness of the aircraft being provided. The applicant may wish to fill out, and provide to the Examiner, this generic Maintenance Compliance Checklist prior to the scheduled practical test. Since the Examiner may have little or no personal experience with the particular aircraft provided by the applicant, it may also be useful for the applicant to fill out, and provide to the Examiner, this generic Aircraft Specifications Checklist prior to the scheduled practical test.

Should the aircraft provided by the applicant for the flight test be found to be in a non-airworthy condition, or otherwise not in a condition for safe operation, the Examiner may, at his or her sole discretion, decline to provide examining services in that particular aircraft. Such a determination may result in a Discontinuance of the practical test, or a Letter of Disqualification, depending upon the nature of the non-airworthy or unsafe determination.
